Der Titel wurde am 7. Oktober 1919 dem Feldmarschall Edmund Allenby verliehen, der im Ersten Weltkrieg als Befehlshaber der alliierten Truppen in Palästina große Erfolge gegen die osmanischen Truppen erzielt hatte.
