Edward Baird (1904 – 7 January 1949) was a Scottish artist, known for his portrait painting. Biography. Baird was born in Montrose in 1904, the son of a sea captain. He was descended from a long line of seafarers, but poor health throughout his life meant that he was unable to follow his forebears to sea.

Often described as a Scottish Surrealist, Baird is equally known for his association with the Scottish Renaissance movement. His artistic output was relatively small, due to his perfectionism, time-intensive manner of working and his early death at the age of forty-five.

About. Born at Montrose, Edward Baird emerges as a man of high moral purpose, deeply rooted in his home town community. A passionate Scottish nationalist and socialist, his painting was profoundly influenced by the work of the Italian 'primitives' and executed in the context of the Scottish Renaissance of the 1920s and '30s.
