  6. 1. Nov. 1999 · Abstract. Professor Edward Purcell was a physicist of great distinction. With Felix Bloch he received the joint award of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1952, for the developments respectively of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and nuclear induction.

  7. In 1952, he shared the Nobel Prize in Physics for discovering a way to detect the extremely weak magnetism of the atomic nucleus. The method, measuring nuclear magnetic resonance, is widely used to study the structure of molecules and to measure magnetic fields.
