Sir Edward John Poynter, 1st Baronet GCVO, PRA (20 March 1836 – 26 July 1919) was an English painter, designer, and draughtsman, who served as President of the Royal Academy . Life. Poynter was the son of architect Ambrose Poynter. He was born in Paris, France, though his parents returned to Britain soon after his birth.

Leading the Revival of Realism. Early in his career Poynter studied in Rome, where he met Frederic Leighton, his greatest single artistic influence. He then moved to Paris in 1855. On returning to London, he became involved on book illustration.
Sir Edward Poynter was Director of the National Gallery and President of the Royal Academy at the turn of the last century. Born in Paris on 20 March 1836, Poynter had attended a number of schools in England before turning towards training as an artist in 1852.
