Eileen Blair was born Eileen O’Shaughnessy in South Shields in 1905, to an Irish father, Laurence O’Shaughnessy, and an English mother, Mary Westgate. Orwell rarely mentioned Ireland, a country and people about which he had mixed feelings, occasionally hostile.
