Eleanor Parke Custis Lewis, the granddaughter of Martha Washington, was born at Abingdon. Eleanor's father, John Parke Custis, had purchased Abingdon in 1778, and Eleanor was born in March of the following year and raised there. By 1930, a fire had destroyed the remnants of Abingdon.
