Courant war der Sohn des Mathematikers Richard Courant sowie Nerina (Nina) Runges, einer Tochter des Mathematikers Carl Runge, und hatte deshalb schon seit frühester Jugend zahlreiche Kontakte zu den exakten Wissenschaften.
