Ernst Troeltsch was born in Haunstetten near Augsburg, Germany, on February 17, 1865. He was the eldest of five children. The son of a doctor, his father encouraged him to think about scientific problems. On completing his studies at the gymnasium in Augsburg, Troeltsch entered the University of Erlangan to study theology in 1884.
