James Hubert " Eubie " Blake (February 7, 1887 – February 12, 1983) was an American pianist and composer of ragtime, jazz, and popular music. In 1921, he and his long-time collaborator Noble Sissle wrote Shuffle Along, one of the first Broadway musicals written and directed by African Americans. [1]
Eubie Blake (born February 7, 1887, Baltimore, Maryland, U.S.—died February 12, 1983, Brooklyn, New York) was an American pianist and composer of ragtime music, popular and vaudeville tunes, and scores for musical theatre—most notably Shuffle Along (1921), his groundbreaking collaboration with singer and lyricist Noble Sissle.

He wrote songs for Shuffle Along, the first all-black musical hit on Broadway, and created his own shows such as Swing It and Blackbirds. He toured the world as a pianist and lecturer until his death at age 100.
