Erst 1964 nahm er seine erste eigene LP für Chess Records (The Soul of Blues Harmonica) auf. In den 1970ern tourte er in den Staaten und in Europa, oft mit Willie Dixon und seinen „Chicago Blues All-Stars“. Er spielte mit Bluesrock -Größen wie Fleetwood Mac und Johnny Winter.

He performed and recorded with Muddy Waters, Jimmy Rogers, Willie Dixon, Fleetwood Mac, Johnny Winter, and many others. His technique and tone continue to be studied and emulated by harmonica players around the world. ⠀. Walter Horton was heralded as one of the most brilliant and creative musicians ever to play the harmonica.
Im September 1969 wurde in Chicago das Doppelalbum Fleetwood Mac in Chicago in Form von Sessionaufnahmen ( Blues Jam at Chess) zusammen mit einigen bekannten afroamerikanischen Bluesmusikern wie Otis Spann, Buddy Guy und Willie Dixon sowie Walter „Shakey“ Horton eingespielt und im Dezember desselben Jahres herausgebracht.
Horton also toured and recorded with Willie Dixon’s Chicago Blues All Stars, and played on the Fleetwood Mac album Blues Jam in Chicago. Full albums of his work appeared on several labels, including Alligator, Chess, and Blind Pig. Horton toured internationally, but in Chicago most of his work was in small clubs.
