This painting was first exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1808. It combines an appreciation for seventeenth-century Dutch cabinet pictures, which had been fashionable among French collectors since the late eighteenth century, with a new interest in the everyday life of contemporary Italians.
François-Marius Granet war ein französischer Landschafts-, Genre- und Historienmaler des Klassizismus und der Romantik. Von 1826 bis 1846 war er als Konservator im Louvre tätig.
He was famous for his paintings of church and convent interiors. In 1824 Granet went back France to become a curator at the Louvre. He was later director of the Museum of French History at Versailles, a post he kept until the Revolution of 1848. He bequeathed to the town of Aix his own collection, which is now housed in the Musée Granet.
