Schelling sollte Theologie studieren und besuchte in den Jahren 1752 bis 1756 die Klosterschulen zu Herbrechtingen, Denkendorf und Maulbronn, dann von 1756 bis 1758 das Stipendium in Tübingen, das er mit dem Grad eines Magisters abschloss.

Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph von Schelling (* 27. január 1775, Leonberg – † 20. august 1854, Bad Ragaz) bol filozof, predstaviteľ nemeckého klasického idealizmu a jeho spojenia s romantikou. Učil v Jene, Würzburgu, Erlangene, Mníchove a Berlíne. Vzhľadom na neustále menenie jeho filozofie ho nazývali Proteus filozofie.
