In 1970, at age 52, Rufus Thomas made a remarkable career comeback with his self-penned "Do the Funky Chicken," a #5 r&b chart hit that combined the Mississippi-born entertainer’s roots in vaudeville and the blues with the smoldering funk of the Bar-Kays’ rhythm section, augmented by son Marvell Thomas on keyboards.
