Gabriele Veneziano visited CERN in 1968 and wrote a paper that marked the beginning of string theory. He explains how he developed a model of hadrons as quantised strings and how it led to the discovery of the strong interaction. He also discusses the current status and challenges of string theory and its applications in physics.
