Gaston Baty was a French playwright and producer who exerted a notable influence on world theatre during the 1920s and ’30s. Baty was influenced by both German and Russian theatre, particularly the work of Munich designer Fritz Erler, and favoured a nonnaturalistic approach to staging to abolish.

Gaston Baty (1885-1952) débute en 1919 comme assistant de Firmin Gémier, alors directeur du Cirque d’hiver. A la Comédie Montaigne, en 1920, il monte Le Simoun de Henri-René Lenormand. Il fonde une troupe qu’il baptise « les Compagnons de la Chimère » et fait construire à St Germain des près, une baraque en bois où il défend des nouveaux auteurs.
