Watts believed that art should preach a universal message, but his subject matter, conceived in terms of vague abstract ideals, is full of symbolism that is often obscure and today seems superficial.
George Frederic Watts. 1817 - 1904. Watts was able to support himself as an artist from the age of 16. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1837 onwards and in 1843 won a prize in a competition for decorations for the new Palace of Westminster.
