  4. George Hogarth, the son of Robert Hogarth, a farmer, and his wife, Mary Scott, was born at Carfrae Mill, near Oxton, Berwickshire, on 6th September 1783. Hogarth studied law in Edinburgh. He also studied the cello and composition, and acted as joint secretary to the Edinburgh Music Festival.
