After the fall of Napoléon, lived in exile in Italy where married Giustina Pecori-Suárez. Came back to France c.1847 and when his nephew, the future Napoleon III (q.v.), became President in 1848, Jérôme was made Governor of the Invalides (1848), Marshal of France and president of the Senate.
