Hopper was born on December 9, 1906 in New York City. As a child, she attended a preparatory school in New Jersey. Later, she enrolled at Vassar College. After graduating with her bachelor’s degree, Hopper went to Yale University, where she earned her Masters and PhD in Mathematics. Afterwards she began teaching at Vassar College.
College History. The history of the College is certainly living history. It was founded as Calhoun College in 1933, and renamed Grace Hopper College in 2017. Heightened discussion and debate about whether the College’s name should change and if so, to what, began in the late 1970s and continued, unevenly, through 2017.

She received a master’s degree (1930) and a Ph.D. (1934) in mathematics from Yale.
