History. Rare Bird began when organist Graham Stansfield (a.k.a. Graham Field) placed an advertisement for a pianist in a musical periodical. He received thirty replies and subsequently formed a group called Lunch. He met David Kaffinetti in November 1968, and together they formulated the basic ideas for Rare Bird.

Dorset composer Graham Stansfield passed away peacefully in Poole Hospital on Friday 13 April following a long and valiant struggle with cancer, an illness he steadfastly refused to make concessions to. He worked consistently throughout lengthy and often debilitating periods of treatment.
29. Aug. 2020 · Graham Field (aka Graham Frederick Stansfield, May 3, 1940 — April 13, 2018) hailed from the organ-rock/psych combo Rare Bird, appearing on the band’s first two albums Rare Bird (1969) and As Your Mind Flies By (1970).
The band was named after Graham Field who played organ and piano. It also featured Alan Barry on vocals, bass, guitar and mellotron and Andy McCullough (drummer on King Crimson - Lizard and later drummed for Greenslade) on drums and percussion.
