The Handel Messiah dates from 1946, and was the first of several recordings the conductor made of this choral monolith. Although it gets off to a slow, tedious start, the tempi are perfectly acceptable as the work progresses. The four soloists are fine, yet the dated mono sound can be hard-edged and unforgiving.
