1. Jan. 2012 · The Midnighters were inducted on Saturday, April 14, 2012, into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, belatedly joining lead singer Hank Ballard, a 1990 inductee who died in 2003.
History. Hank Ballard wrote "The Twist" after seeing teenagers in Tampa, Florida doing the titular dance. In a 2014 interview with Tom Meros, Midnighters member Lawson Smith claimed that The Gospel Consolaters' Nathaniel Bills wrote the song and initially asked The Spaniels to record it, and that Ballard "stole" the song, falsely claiming authorship.

Hank Ballard. Soundtrack: Back to the Future. Hank Ballard grew up singing gospel in church in his hometown of Bessemer, Alabama. He had always wanted to sing professionally, and at 16 years of age got a chance to do it when he took over a group called The Royals, which had been organized in 1950 (and among whose original members were Levi Stubbs and Jackie Wilson).
