In 725CE Emperor Xuanzong founded an academy within the Imperial Palace at Chang’an (present day Xi’an ). It was originally open to all kinds of expert, not just scholars, including musicians and acrobats. It prospered and in 738 it moved to a new home: the 翰 林 学 士 Hànlín Xuéshì or 翰 林 院 Hànlín Yuàn.

Hanlin Academy stood near the Imperial Palace and the Tiananmen Gate, visible at the top left of the painting. This work is undoubtedly the most faithful image of this architectural ensemble which has now disappeared, the academy having been largely destroyed during the Boxer War.
