Hans war das dritte Kind des späteren preußischen Generals der Infanterie Richard von Seeckt (1833-1909) und dessen Ehefrau Auguste. Nach dem Abitur trat Seeckt 1885 in das Kaiser Alexander Garde-Grenadier-Regiment Nr. 1 der Preußischen Armee ein und durchlief eine steile militärische Karriere.
Auch nach dem Ausscheiden aus dem aktiven Dienst widmete sich Meier-Welcker historischen Studien. So entstanden zahlreiche Aufsätze über die Zukunft der Militärgeschichte in Deutschland und eine große Biographie zu Hans von Seeckt, die noch heute als Standardwerk gilt. Meier-Welcker verstarb am 1. Januar 1983 in Freiburg/Breisgau.
