Harold Brown (1927-2019) was an American nuclear physicist who served as U.S. Secretary of Defense from 1977 to 1981, under President Jimmy Carter. He also held previous positions in the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, and was the first natural scientist to become secretary of defense.
