22. Okt. 2015 · Harold E. Varmus, M.D. was the 14th director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) from 1993 to 1999. He won the Nobel Prize in 1989 for his work on cancer research and the first Nobel Laureate to lead the NIH. He was a leader in the study of cancer-causing genes, retroviruses, and hepatitis B virus. He also served as a member of the National Research Council, the National Academy of Sciences, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Internationally recognized for his research on retroviruses and the genetic basis of cancer, Harold Varmus served as President and CEO of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center from 2000 to 2010.
