Their first album Was (Not Was) (1981) was an amalgam of rock, disco, Weiss's beat poetry, Reagan-era political - social commentary, and jazz. [3] On vocals they recruited Harry Bowens and "Sweet Pea" Atkinson, who frequently found themselves singing absurdist and satirical songs alongside tender ballads. [3]

Harry Bowens. (b. October 8 th. 1949). Vocalist who came to prominence as a member of funk & R&B outfit, Was (Not Was). Was (Not Was) is an American pop group founded by David Weiss and Don Fagenson, who adopted the stage names David Was and Don Was. They gained popularity in the 1980s and early 1990s.
Nominelle Mitglieder waren – neben den unechten Was-Brüdern – auch die Sänger „Sir“ Harry Bowens, „Sweet Pea“ Atkinson (der 2020 starb) und (ab 1983) Donald Ray Mitchell, Gitarrist Randy Jacobs und Saxofonist David McMurray. Auf ihren Alben wurde die Band außerdem regelmäßig von einem großen Kreis von (oft prominenten) Gastmusikern unterstützt.
