Er wollte ursprünglich Mathematiker werden, studierte dann aber nach sozial frustrierenden Erfahrungen im Schiffbau und einem abgebrochenen Jurastudium Philosophie an der Universität in Aix-en-Provence und schloß dort mit der Promotion ab.
