In 1975, Brenda and Herb Rooney, credited as the Exciters, enjoyed a hit single in the UK with "Reaching for the Best", produced by Rooney and young newcomer producer Ian Levine. The song was aimed at the British Northern soul scene but crossed over to the UK Singles Chart where it peaked at No. 31. [8]

Formed in the Jamaica district of Queens, New York City, this aptly named group, which included sole male Herb Rooney (Born New York City, New York, USA) alongside Brenda Reid, Carol Johnson and Lillian Walker, first came to prominence with the vibrant "Tell Him", a US Top 5 hit in 1962 (also a hit in the UK for Billie Davis in 1963).
