  3. 10. Nov. 2023 · ALMOST 75 years after its original unveiling the memorial board commemorating Holgate Grammar School pupils who lost their lives in World War Two has been rededicated. The board, which has found a new home at Shaw Lane Sports Club, was originally placed in the old grammar school back in 1948.

  4. Holgate Grammar School. The old school was founded by Thomas Keresforth in 1660 and was situated opposite St Mary's Church on Church Street in Barnsley. In 1887 the Grammar School founded by Archbishop Holgate in the 16th Century at Hemsworth was combined with the Barnsley school.

When it comes to loss of life in service to one’s country, one Barnsley school paid far more dearly than any other. During World War Two, 98 pupils from Barnsley Holgate Grammar School tragically lost their lives when they went to fight for their country.
