Holgate School was a state school in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England. It was closed in 2012, when it was merged with The Kingstone School to form Horizon Community College. After Holgate closed, it was demolished and the site was turned into a car park for Horizon Community College.

When the school closed in 2012, the brass panelled wooden plaque was rescued from demolition and placed in storage beneath Barnsley Town Hall. Jane Ainsworth alongside many others form the public and private sector were unwilling to let these names be forgotten, and have worked to get the memorial returned to public view at Shaw Lane Sports Club, just yards away from it’s original home.
Douglas was survived by his son, Malcolm, who, during our research, remembered attending the unveiling of the Barnsley and District Holgate Grammar School plaque, on which our quest to honour those mentioned thereon, is based. 10. Nov. 2023 · ALMOST 75 years after its original unveiling the memorial board commemorating Holgate Grammar School pupils who lost their lives in World War Two has been rededicated. The board, which has found a new home at Shaw Lane Sports Club, was originally placed in the old grammar school back in 1948.

Holgate Grammar School. The old school was founded by Thomas Keresforth in 1660 and was situated opposite St Mary's Church on Church Street in Barnsley. In 1887 the Grammar School founded by Archbishop Holgate in the 16th Century at Hemsworth was combined with the Barnsley school.
