The best putter early in 1980 had been Ilona Slupianek (GDR) who broke the world record twice in May with 22.36 (73-4½) and 22.45 (73-8). Slupianek won the gold medal in round one with 22.41 (73-6¼) and dominated the competition. Her worst mark of six fair throws was 21.42 (70-3½), which would have tied for the silver medal.

Ilona Schoknecht-Slupianek started in 1976 under her maiden name of Schoknecht and in 1980 as Slupianek, after marriage, but was then divorced and was re-married to her teammate Hartmut Briesenick, but retained her surname, although they also later divorced. Ilona Slupianek war die erste und einzige DDR-Athletin, der man während ihrer aktiven Zeit bei einem internationalen Wettkampf Dopingmissbrauch nachweisen konnte (Europapokalfinale 1977). Die europäische Leichtathletik-Föderation verhängte daraufhin für sie eine einjährige Sperre, die kurz vor den EM 1978 auslief.
