Original incarnation. Drummer John Hartman arrived in California determined to meet Skip Spence of Moby Grape and join an aborted Grape reunion. Spence introduced Hartman to singer, guitarist, and songwriter Tom Johnston and the two proceeded to form the nucleus of what would become the Doobie Brothers.

The Doobie Brothers wurden 1969 von Tom Johnston, John Hartman, Skip Spence (ex- Moby Grape) und Gregg Murph in Süd-Kalifornien unter dem Bandnamen Pud gegründet. Gregg Murph verließ bald die Band, als Ersatz kam Dave Shogren. 1970 kam noch Patrick Simmons dazu. Doobie ist eine Slangbezeichnung für einen Zwei-Blatt-Joint.
