  5. Library of Congress. James Samuel Wadsworth was born in Geneseo, New York on October 30, 1807. He began Harvard, left, and then finished his studies at Yale, passing the bar in 1832. He never practiced law, but instead became a philanthropist, entered politics and managed the family estate.
