Jane (Mallory) Birkin wurde am 14. Dez. 1946 in Londongeboren. Der Vater Major David Birkin war bei der Royal Navy, die Mutter Judy Campell Schauspielerin. B. hat zwei Geschwister. Ihr Bruder ist der Drehbuchautor und Regisseur Andrew Birkin.
B. besuchte die Upper Chine School auf der Isle of Wight. Anschließend ging sie auf die Kensington Academy und trat in die Fußstapfen ihrer Mutter. Mit 17 Jahren begann sie mit einer Rolle in dem Graham-Greene-Stück "Carving a Statue" im Haymarket Theatre in London ihre Schauspielkarriere.
Mit schnellen Schritten zu RuhmIhr Debüt als Sängerin hatte B. in dem Musical "Passion Flower Hotel" im Prince of Wales Theatre. Ihre erste kleine Filmrolle bekam sie 1965 in Richard Lesters Komödie "The Knack and How to Get it", der im gleichen Jahr in Cannes die Goldene Palme erhielt.
