Jean-Antoine Chaptal, comte de Chanteloup, agronome et chimiste, est né à Nogaret, petite ville du département actuel de la Lozère, en 1750. Il est mort à Paris en 1832. Chaptal a été un savant pratique et un ministre vulgarisateur. Il a su faire descendre la science des hauteurs de la théorie dans les chemins de l'utilité courante.
