Bessières, Jean Baptiste, Herzog von Istrien, franz. Marschall, wurde am 6. Aug. 1768 zu Preissac geboren. Er stammte aus einem armen Elternhaus und trat 1790 in die konstitutionelle Garde Ludwigs XVI. ein um bis 1792 in den Pyrenäen zu dienen. 1794 wurde er Kapitän und kämpfte 1796-1797 mit Bravour in Italien, woraufhin er Bonapartes Gunst gewann.
