Nattier received his first instruction from his father, the portraitist Marc Nattier (c. 1642–1705), and from his uncle, the history painter Jean Jouvenet.

Born in Paris on March 17, 1685, he was the godchild of the history painter Jean Jouvenet (1644-1717), who was to play a role in his early artistic training.
