Nattier received his first instruction from his father, the portraitist Marc Nattier (c. 1642–1705), and from his uncle, the history painter Jean Jouvenet.

Jean-Marc Nattier was the son of an insignificant portraitist of the reign of Louis XIV, Marc Nattier (1642-1705), and his wife, the miniaturist Marie Courtois (1655-1703). Born in Paris on March 17, 1685, he was the godchild of the history painter Jean Jouvenet (1644-1717), who was to play a role in his early artistic training.
