Brahms gilt heute als der erste bedeutende Sinfoniker nach Ludwig van Beethoven. Oft wird seine 1. Sinfonie als Beethovens 10. bezeichnet. Er hatte einen Schritt gewagt, den damals niemand für möglich hielt. Er trat aus dem Schatten Beethovens hervor und schuf sich seine eigene sinfonische Welt.
