His scenes of daily life and Celtic mythology contributed to the surge of nationalism in the Irish arts after the Irish War of Independence (1919–21).

He studied at Trinity College, Dublin, and in London, and became a portrait painter in Ireland and New York. He was influenced by his father's Protestantism, his mother's culture, and his friends in the arts and politics. He died in 1922.
