John Cardon Debney (born August 18, 1956) is an American composer, conductor and musician. He received an Academy Award nomination for the music for Mel Gibson 's The Passion of the Christ (2004). He is also known for writing the music for Cutthroat Island (1995).
Debney has also worked with industry titan Seth MacFarlane on numerous episodes of his sci-fi space series The Orville, utilizing nearly 100-piece orchestras to record his bombastic adventure scores. His first foray into videogame scoring—Sony’s 2007 medieval adventure Lair—resulted in a BAFTA nomination and a Best Videogame Score award from The International Film Music Critics Association.
