Hicks was recognized for his theories of welfare and resources allocation and his macroeconomic studies of general equilibrium. Educated at Balliol College, Oxford, John Hicks returned there as the Drummond Professor of Political Economy, a post he held until his retirement in 1965. In 1935 he married the economist Ursula Webb.
John Hicks was a member of the Royal Commission on the Taxation of Prots and Income in 1951. He. fi. became a Fellow of the British Academy in 1942, a Knight in 1964, and was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics (jointly with Kenneth J. Arrow) in 1972. He died in 1989.
