Like his contemporary Walker Evans, John Swope came to photography from a position of privilege. Unlike Evans, who preferred to find America’s self-invention in subtle details, Swope went straight to Hollywood, the bright, obvious generator of mythology.
John Swope was a versatile and influential photographer who captured a broad spectrum of subjects in black and white. He documented Hollywood, war, India, and more with a keen eye for the human condition and aesthetics.
