print. John Emerson, a lawyer in Ironton, Missouri, became a small-town Victorian gentleman who lived a significant public life in southeast Missouri and St. Louis. His cosmopolitan interests included the law, poetry, literature, philosophy, public speaking and education, building and landscape design, and wilderness sporting and conservation.
With the financial backing of John Wesley Emerson, a former Union army officer, judge and lawyer, they establish The Emerson Electric Manufacturing Company in St. Louis, Missouri. 1892. The fledgling company builds its business around AC motors and manufactures the first electric fans sold in North America.

History. Emerson was established in 1890 in St. Louis, Missouri, as Emerson Electric Manufacturing Co. by Civil War Union veteran John Wesley Emerson to manufacture electric motors using a patent owned by the Scottish-born brothers Charles and Alexander Meston. In 1892, it became the first to sell electric fans in the United States.
