The 213 acres (0.86 km 2) of land upon which the house and gristmill were built was granted to Jonathan Dunham by the newly appointed Governor of New Jersey. The Dunham house is the oldest building in Woodbridge Township, and among the oldest buildings in Middlesex County.

Jonathan Dunham alias Singletary of Woodbridge, New Jersey was the son of Richard Singletary. When Jonathan moved to Woodbridge in 1665-70 he began using Dunham as his surname. The reason for this is not known, however all of his descendants used either the Dunham or Donham spelling.
JONATHAN SINGLETARY (later Jonathan Dunham, alias Singletary) was the first child of Richard Singletary which is documented in many places and in vital records.
