Kinky, nicknamed for his hair, was born Richard F. Friedman in Chicago on October 31, 1944, but raised in Austin, Texas, where his father, Tom, was an educational psychologist. His mother, Minnie, was a speech therapist. Both, said Kinky, were from eastern Europe, although Tom certainly grew up in the United States.
