After learning to play the piano at a very young age, Watkins played keyboards in cover bands, progressing up to songs by ELP and Rush. In college he met guitarist Stanley Whitaker, who introduced him to even more of the prog rock world. In 1973 Watkins joined Whitaker's band Happy The Man.
