I've been in LA without a car for 8 years now, almost half the time I've been doing this professionaly - so honestly, it's possible. You will need to do a lot of planning, and have a lot of time to get where you're going. I use both public transit and rideshare, sometimes a combination of both. I wouldn't rely on rideshare completely though, as like everyone said, it can add up.
