Le Tempestaire est l'avant-dernier volet du cycle maritime, soit près de quinze ans après L'Or des mers. Le film est tourné avec les pêcheurs et les gardiens de phare de Belle-Île-en-Mer, entre décembre 1946 et janvier 1947, dans l'inclémence et le gros temps de l'hiver, loin de l'imagerie rapportée des touristes estivaux.
