Le Tempestaire est l'avant-dernier volet du cycle maritime, soit près de quinze ans après L'Or des mers. Le film est tourné avec les pêcheurs et les gardiens de phare de Belle-Île-en-Mer, entre décembre 1946 et janvier 1947, dans l'inclémence et le gros temps de l'hiver, loin de l'imagerie rapportée des touristes estivaux.
Inspired by an old Breton legend and set in the director's adopted homeland of Brittany, Le Tempestaire is a captivating poem on the sea that is both an avant-garde masterpiece and a haunting evocation of man's complex relationship with the natural world.
He gave the rough sea and the howling wind an important place in this short film, both in sound and image. It is a mystical story about a woman who senses that something will happen to her boyfriend, a fisherman, when he sets sail.
